Our team, which includes personnel from many different disciplines, has over 25 years of collective experience. This experience and the wide variety of backgrounds our team brings to the table, has allowed us to overcome problems that up to now have been unsolved or intractable.


Matthew Hudson
Chief Executive Officer

Matthew Hudson is Invenia's Chief Executive Officer, and has held the position since the Corporation's inception.  As CEO, Matthew oversees all aspects of the companies operations.

Matthew was formerly with Microsoft's Software + Services division where he contributed to the success of Microsoft's cloud-based offerings. As CEO, Matthew oversees Invenia's operations with a particular focus on strategic planning, key partnerships and management of the executive team. Matthew attended the University of Manitoba and received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies and Economics. He now leads a company with over 25 years of experience in areas as diverse as engineering, machine learning, economics, theoretical physics, mathematics, and management.


Nick Curry
Chief Financial Officer / Chief Operating Officer

Nick Curry is Invenia's Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer, and has held the position since 2008.  At Invenia, Nick is primarily responsible for corporate strategy, acquisitions, treasury activities, tax planning, accounting and reporting, internal audit and investor relations.

Nick has over 18 years of senior executive (CFO / COO / CIO) management experience including 8 years with Great West Life, and 7 years with MTS Allstream. Nick holds Master Degrees in Science (Computer Science) and Business Administration (Finance) from the University of Manitoba.


Kerry Stevenson
Chief Technical Officer

Kerry Stevenson is Invenia's Chief Technology Officer, where he is primarily responsible for technology strategy, implementation, architecture and operation.

Kerry has held senior IT executive roles in several organizations since 1989, most recently being the first Chief Architect and Chief Technology Officer at Great-West Life/Investors Group/London Life during 17 year term. Kerry began the popular Fabbaloo 3D printing blog in 2007, spoke at a TEDx conference in 2011, and is a Founding Director of AssentWorks. Kerry holds a B.Sc. (Hons) and a M.Sc. in computer science from the University of Manitoba.


Ali Ashtari
Head of Research

Ali Ashtari is Invenia's Lead Researcher, having joined our management team in 2010. Ali is responsible for our applied research, and directly oversees the research team.

After graduating with B. Sc. and M. Sc. degrees from the top engineering school in the region, Sharif University of Technology, he attained his PhD in electrical and computer engineering. Ali's post-doc work included projects for Manitoba Hydro's research department. Ali has extensive academic and industrial experience in signal processing, statistics, numerical methods and optimization applied to various problems ranging from biomedical applications, renewable energy and electricity markets.


David Duvenaud
Chief Researcher: Machine Learning

David Duvenaud joined the Invenia team in September 2006, as our Chief Researcher in the area of Machine Learning. David is primarily tasked with direct research and implementation of novel algorithms and approaches.

David has a M. Sc. in Computer Science, specializing in machine learning from the University of British Columbia. He has done applied research in genetic algorithms for the Canadian Air Force, as well as development work on a state-of-the art fluid simulor at Frantic Films. In 2006 he was a member of Team Manitoba Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Group, which took first prize in the worldwide Student Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Competition sponsored by the U.S. Navy, outcompeting teams from M.I.T. and Cornell. Currently David is in the final year of his PhD program in applied Machine Learning, studying under Dr. Carl Rasmussen at the Cambridge Machine Learning Group in the United Kingdom.


Cozmin Ududec
Risk Management Lead

Cozmin Ududec is a co-founder of Invenia, and has been the risk management lead since 2011. Cozmin is responsible for quantifying and managing the financial risks associated with trading in energy arbitrage markets, using tools ranging from extreme value theory, through to GARCH models, as well as other novel time series analysis techniques.

After graduating with a joint degree in Mathematics and Physics in 2006, Cozmin became a student in residence at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Emerson. In 2012 he attained his PhD in quantum physics from the University of Waterloo.


Michael de Denus
Electricity Markets Lead

Michael de Denus joined the Invenia team in 2009, as our electricity markets lead. Michael focuses on the analysis and exploration of nodal and spot electricity markets.

Michael has a M. Sc. in Computer Science, specializing in artificial intelligence, from the University of Manitoba. While working on his degree, he developed a robotics system for maintaining formation movement with varying numbers of robots without the use of shared information. His teams have won awards at numerous international robotics competitions.
